The Ministry of Transport has begun Phase Two of a ‘vigorous’ joint inspection and enforcement exercise for verification of vehicles, motorcycles, tricycles registration and driver’s licenses on Tuesday, November 20, in Monrovia and its environs.
The exercise will be conducted by the Transport Ministry in collaboration with the Liberia National Police (LNP) and the Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA) to get people to register their vehicle, motorcycles, tricycles, as well as update their driver’s licenses.
Meanwhile, the Ministry has cautioned vehicle and related transportation owners to note that an impoundment fee will be paid before an impounded vehicle is released.
In a related development, the Liberia News Agency Southeastern correspondent has gathered that the Grand Gedeh office of the Ministry of Transport has started to inspect motorcycles for registration documents and their riders for operator’s licenses as part of the Phase Two inspection and enforcement scheme to later include vehicles of different categories.
The activity is expected to be extended to River Gee, Grand Kru, Sinoe, and Maryland counties, according to the ministry’s regional coordinator, T-Max Deah.
Deah told the Liberia News Agency at the weekend in Zwedru that his office is also partnering with the LRA and Grand Gedeh County detachment of the Liberia National Police in ensuring that the exercise becomes successful.
In previous years, a motorcyclist would pay US$50 per plate, but that figure has been sliced by 50 percent thanks to the Ministries of Transport and Finance and Development Planning, Deah said.
“The fee reduction is in line with government’s plan to provide better living conditions and economic empowerment for its people,” he added.
Many residents and vehicle operators have hailed the issuance of driver’s licenses in the southeastern region as a milestone in the government’s decentralization policy.
