Bolaji’s Strike Sends BYC Out Of CAF Champions League

Sakin Bolaji goal in the 74th minute saw Horoya AC defeating Liberia Football Association (LFA) double Champions Barrack Young Controllers (BYC) to progress to the first round of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League qualifiers with a 2-0 aggregate at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium.

Barrack Young Controllers who suffered similar score in the first leg needed a 2-0 win at home to get pass the Guinean side in the Champions League preliminary round.

Robert Lartey’s boys had an overwhelming confidence going into the second leg after displaying a moral boosting performance in the first leg in Guinea.

The hosts began the encounter on the front foot, Yaya Bility came close to scoring with a free header from Jeremy Saygbe’s cross but the midfielder effort went over the bar in the 11th minute.

The Go Blue Boys kept the visitors quite for vast portion of match and had another opportunity to go ahead but William Freeman’s marvelous strike drew Senegalese goalkeeper Daye N’ Khadim to action with 21- minute on the clock.

It appeared like Horoya AC came for a draw in Monrovia, as they showed a little attacking threat in the early minutes of the match but with 45th minute on the clock captain Ocansey Mandela forced a save from Alpha Jalloh and their goalkeeper had to be substituted through injury.

The Go Blue boys optimism grew in the second half showing some flashes of attacking instances as David Twen through ball found Mustapha Lomell but the his effort was blocked by Fred Asante on 47th minute.

Saygbe struck a stunning effort from 22-yard but it was saved by substitute goalkeeper Germain Berthe after Coach Samuel Sumo had increased his attacking force as he brought on the Kelvin Potis in the 52-minute.

The hosts were getting increasingly frustrated as they could not utilized their chances as Coach Sumu made two changes, Fallah Sheriff and Robert Taylor to boost their attacking options and to find the a goal to take the match to penalty.

But they were made to pay for their dreadful defending on 74th minute as Bolaji advanced to Abou Camara‘s delicious cross to smash the ball in the back of Jalloh’s goal from close range.

Three minutes after scoring, the visitors had another chance to double their but Jalloh made a brilliant saved, and Eugene Swen twice went to his team’s rescue with some beautiful goal line clearances.

Meanwhile, Horoya will face Libyan club Al Nasr in the first round of the CAF Champions League this month in Libya before hosting the opponents in the second leg in Guinea.
