‘Cultural Exchanges Will Strengthen China-Liberia Bond’ -Chinese Ambassador Fu

Chinese Ambassador to Liberia Fu Jijun has emphasized that having more people-to-people exchanges in culture, arts, education, sports and the media will further strengthen the bonds of friendship and cooperation between China and Liberia.

Ambassador Fu noted that leaders of African countries, including President George Weah, agreed to launch this initiative at the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) held in Beijing in September.

Speaking at programs marking the cultural performance of the 2018 Confucius Institute Art Tour to Liberia, Ambassador Fu explained that the tour is an institutional program launched by the Headquarter of China’s Confucius Institute and undertaken by the artistic troupes of Chinese Universities.

The aim of the tour is to get more foreign students to appreciate the colourful Chinese culture, enhancing the mutual understanding between the peoples, and promoting the friendship and people-to-people bond between China and foreign countries.

He pointed out that as a result of the people-to-people initiative, about 50 joint Africa and China cultural, sports and tourism events will be organized in the next three years which will lead to the construction of additional cultural centers in China and African countries.

Ambassador Fu noted he is confident that with the implementation of the initiative, there will be more bilateral exchange visits of culture, art, and education between China and Liberia to further cement the already existing ties between the two countries.

The program marks the 10th anniversary of the Confucius Institute at the University of Liberia which over the years has played an important role in teaching the Chinese language and spreading the Chinese culture in Liberia.

The Chinese envoy explained that the zeal of Liberian students to learn the Chinese language is overwhelming and the number of schools and students that are learning Chinese in Liberia has also increased.

He then thanked Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor for gracing the occasion and for her support to the development of education and culture in Liberian as well as enhancing the mutual collaboration between China and Liberia.
