European Union in Liberia Head of Delegation Laurent Delahousse wants Government issue an Executive Order to ban Female Genital Mutilation and allow same sex marriage.
The EU Envoy calls were contained in a statement delivered at the taking over ceremony of the Board Commissioners of the Independent National Commission on Human Rights.
“On Female Genital Mutilation, the European Union calls on the Government of Liberia to take immediate action to issue Executive Order banning FGM, while working with the Legislature to deliver a law and permanent ban of FGM, and working with communities to change these practices,” Delahousse said.
On same sex marriage, the Head of EU Delegation to Liberia said “third issue, the criminalization of consensual sexual conduct by same-sex couples. The Penal Code of Liberia continues to criminalize adult, consensual sexual conduct by same-sex couples in violation of Articles 2(1), 17, 23 and 26 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. The existence of such deprives Lesbians, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) individuals of equal protection of the law.”
