Grand Mufti Urges Cape Mountainians To Invest More In Education

The Grand Mufti of Liberia, Sheikh Aboubakar Sumaworo, is admonishing Cape Mountianians to invest more in education, if they are to benefit from the fertile land and huge deposits of natural resources that Allah has given them.

Speaking in Kon Town recently at a program marking the dedication of the Kon Town English and Arabic School he sponsored to be built, the Grand Mufti told the people of Cape Mount that it is indeed Allah’s blessing that their county has fertile land and huge mineral deposits.

Sheikh Sumaworo said even though they are proud to say the soil of Cape Mount is one of the best in Liberia and even in West Africa, ironically thecounty remains one of the poorest communities in Liberia.

The Liberian Islamic cleric said there is need for citizens of Cape Mount to collectively find a solution to this problem.

According to Sheikh Sumaworo, one way of solving this problem is for the people to invest in the education of their children, noting that when the children are educated they will serve as agents of change in their various communities, thereby transforming the county.

The Islamic scholar used the Sime Darby Plantation and Malaysia as examples of the benefits of education.

He said as a young student in Saudi Arabia in the 1970s, he had the privilege of having a Malaysian classmate.

He said during that period Malaysia was a backward country, but a leader came to power and told Malaysians that the solution to their underdevelopment is education.

He said the country invested so much in education that today Malaysia is a developed nation.

He is therefore calling on the people of Cape Mount to learn from the Malaysian example.

The Grand Mufti of Liberia also cautioned parents to stop sending the girl child to sell in the streets, noting that “if you send your children to sell, it will not be food stuffs that will be sold, but the future of the children themselves.”
