Liberian-Born Boxer Wins WBO European Welterweight Title

Islington welterweight Freddy Kiwitt

Freddy Kiwitt, a Liberian-born London-based German has placed Liberia, his country of birth, on the map of sports after he won the WBO European Welterweight title on Sunday.

Kiwitt, who won the title by majority decision over Patrick Gallagher a native of Belfast, Northern Ireland in the United Kingdom, will be remembered in history just like former soccer legend and now President of the Republic of Liberia, George Manneh Weah.

Weah brought Liberia to fame after he became the first and only African to win the FIFA World Player of the Year award in 1995 as well as the Best African Footballer award.

Just like Weah, Kiwitt’s triumph in the world of boxing has placed his native land Liberia under the spotlight as a nation that is known for setting new records amidst the difficulties associated with being born in a place where opportunities are scarce.

The Liberian-born London-based sporting star was very optimistic ahead of the fight when he granted ‘Boxing Ghana’ an interview.

The scorecard read 93-95, 95-95, 94-95 as Kiwitt won by majority decision over Gallagher at the York Hall Bethnal Green in London over the weekend.

The African warrior floored Gallagher twice in Rounds 5 and 8 en route to his majority decision victory.

Gallagher (15-5,9KOs) was completely shocked with the outcome of the bout as Kiwitt improved his record to (15-2,8KOs) for a shot at the world title now that he has won the WBO European title.

Kiwitt, birth name Frederick Gloyluo, was born in Saclepea, Nimba County in northern Liberia on August 24, 1990, and immigrated to Germany where he is a national but presently resides in Islington, London, United Kingdom.
