Marketers in Pleebo Want Modern Market Dedicated

Marketers and some citizens in Pleebo Sodoken District are calling on the Government and partners to dedicate a modern market in Pleebo Sodoken District that was completed several months ago.

The US$430,424.88 market project was funded by the African Development Bank through the Smallholder Agriculture Productivity Enhancement and Commercialization (SAPEC) project, in partnership with Liberia’s Ministry of Agriculture (MOA).

The contractor, JusMart Engineers has, in recent time, completed and turned the market over to local Government authorities in Maryland County, making it the biggest business hub ever to be constructed in the county.

The marketers in separate interviews said though the market had been completed but marketers continue to sell in makeshift structures during the heavy downpour of rain.

Maryland County Assistant Superintendent for Development, Mr. Robin Scott in May 2019 led an array of local government officials, representatives of non-governmental organizations and civil society actors for the ground breaking of the regional commercial hub.

The newly completed gigantic structure is among several other development projects that were earmarked to be dedicated by President George Manneh Weah during his postponed nationwide tour due to the Corona virus outbreak in the country.

The Liberian leader was also expected to dedicate phase one of the Harper-Fish Town Road Project (Harper to Karloken 50KM) and the Hardwood (One Two, One Two) junction to the Liberian-Ivorian Pedebo Border 16 KM asphalt paved roads constructed by the China Railway No.5 Engineering Company with funding from the African Development Bank.

The structure which contains storage facilities, toilets, play ground for children, water facilities, offices including numerous stalls for food crops and dry goods and 52 stores at its second floor for quality goods among others, stands as a central commercial point for the people of Maryland, Grand Kru, River Gee and the neighbouring Ivory Coast.

Caroline Constance, a Marketer and resident of Pleebo, disclosed that the market was completed and is yet to be dedicated.

More than three months this market was constructed no way to dedicate it Caroline saye.
