Residents of Lexington Township in Sinoe have, for the second time, opposed efforts to construct a bridge over the Duke River because they have been generating money to take care of their families through canoe transport from time immemorial. Sinoe County District #1 Representative Clayton Duncan, is the latest person to be told not to construct any Bridge over the river. The first person was Dew Mayson who also hails from the township.
According to the residents through the Commissioner of the Township, Mr. Rusford Stockton Birch, the River has been a crossing point for decades and a source of survival for citizens who would make ends meet by collecting Ten Liberian Dollars(L$10.00) as fees to cross commuters in canoes.
Mr Birch furthermore lamented that the citizens are not willing to see such thing [construction of a bridge] happening in that area.
Speaking to newsmen, Birch disclosed that another son of the township Amb. Dew Twehwleh Mayson who contested in the 2005 Presidential and Representative Elections was the first person to request the leadership of the area permission to construct bridge on the river but it fell on deaf ears.
The River, which is connected with the Sinoe River have killed up to seven (7) persons between 2018-2020 who were being transported through canoe. Some of the deceased include: Princess Teah ( 17)yrs; Chrisptoher Manneh (16)yrs; Morris Wleh (48)yrs amongst others.
The death of little Princess Teah who was a student of the Frank Brown Public School and got a double promotion from grade 6 to grade 7 and was preparing to sit for the upcoming West African Exmination Council (WAEC) Exams raised eyebrows among authorities of the county.
At the same time, some citizens of the area have abandoned their dweling places due to the actions and behavior of the Township relating to witchcraft.
Sources says, there are some citizens in the area who are accused of being witches and wizards are the ones allegedly responsible for the under development and the death of some citizens in the township.
According to a son of the area who begged not to be named, said that, Representative Duncan have made numerous plans to develop of the township but all the plans can be aborted evil people.
Representative Duncan who is regarded by the people of his constituency as a Developmental Oriented Lawmaker has undertaken seventeenth (17) projects in the County. This is a feat no other lawmaker has achieved since the Sinoe County District #1 lawmaker ascended to the House of Representative in 2017.
